perspective

The term perspective is defined as a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; point of view. We all have a way of perceiving things. On most occasions, we want others to see things our way, forgetting that they may have a different way of looking at it. 

Teaching math for years in the elementary school setting, my approach had changed with the times. Now I have adapted to a way of teaching that opens the door to allowing others to tackle a math problem in the way they know how. We discuss the fact that problems were solved differently, however the same answer was given. I always ask the question, "Is that okay?" getting the response of yes. Children have begun to accept each other for approaching a math problem in different ways. 

When we don't perceive things the way others do, sometimes conflicts arise. An argument might arise bringing the focus onto personal rather than what isn't being perceived the same. One little difference in perspective can cause a world of hurt. Not realizing the simplicity of pausing and understanding that we don't all agree on things the same way. 

A regular practice of Mindfulness can strengthen our awareness of differences in perspective. Allowing us to pause, realize the differences and understand what is happening. Thus giving us the necessary time to respond as oppose to reacting and creating a situation that later we will regret.

My belief that a true change in perspective goes inward. When a situation arises and creates feelings and emotions, to look within ourselves to work on what arises is a healthy approach. As opposed to finding blame in someone else for creating the feelings and emotions that arose within you. We can only control our responses and actions. If we learn to take care of what arises within us, leaving blame and excuses behind, then we learn to take responsibility for our own well-being. We open the door to living a more loving life.
