Small Steps Toward Big Change

Change is a constant force in our lives, yet it's often met with resistance, especially when we find ourselves stuck in familiar patterns. As a wellbeing coach who has navigated significant changes, I understand the overwhelming nature of change and its crucial role in personal growth.

Feeling the need for something new is a common experience, signaling a desire to veer away from our familiar, well-worn paths. The key is acknowledging that change doesn't always have to be monumental. The small, intentional steps pave the way for profound transformation.

Reflecting on my journey, I've come to appreciate the value of being comfortable with the uncomfortable. It's a perspective that recognizes change as an unavoidable part of life and welcomes it as a driving force for positive growth.

Consider change as a journey; a good metaphor for this process is planting seeds. Just as a seed requires nurturing, patience, and small, consistent efforts to grow into a flourishing plant, so does personal change. From experience, I'd like to share some insights on how to make those small changes that can ultimately lead to something bigger:

  1. Mindful Reflection: Start by taking time to reflect on aspects of your life that you feel need to shift. Identify the patterns or habits that may be holding you back. This self-reflection is the seed that sparks awareness and sets the stage for change.
  2. Set Attainable Goals: Break down the grand vision of change into smaller, achievable goals. These serve as the watering and fertilizing of your metaphorical seed. Each accomplishment, no matter how modest, contributes to the growth of your overall vision.
  3. Establish Consistent Habits: Like watering a plant regularly, establish habits that align with your goals. Whether incorporating mindfulness practices, adopting healthier routines, or cultivating a positive mindset, consistency is the key to nurturing personal growth.
  4. Seek Support: We blossom in supportive environments, so surround yourself with a community that encourages and uplifts you. Share your aspirations with friends, family, or a mentor who can provide guidance and motivation.
  5. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate the small victories along the way. Each success reinforces your ability to adapt and change, building momentum for the larger transformations ahead.
  6. Be Adaptable: Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Being flexible through setbacks or changing conditions ensures sustained progress.

Remember, the journey of life begins with a single step. You're cultivating the fertile ground for significant growth by nurturing small changes. Embrace the process, be patient with yourself, and watch those gradual shifts blossom into a life rich with purpose and fulfillment.

The Importance of Embracing a Child's True Self Early in Life

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to overlook the beauty of authenticity, especially in our children. Recently, I had a touching encounter that reminded me of the importance of nurturing a child's authentic self from an early age. As I observed a young girl, no older than four, walking along the sidewalk after picking up her sibling from school, her profound authenticity caught my attention.

The little girl took a leisurely stroll on the grassy area next to the sidewalk, engaged in what seemed to be a moment of pure imagination and self-expression. As she quietly talked to herself, I couldn't help but marvel at her innocence. It was a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the unbridled spirit of a child.

Amidst my admiration for this young girl's independence, I took a moment to express my thoughts to her mother. Surprisingly, the mother responded with a tinge of sadness. This prompted me to delve deeper into the significance of this reaction and the role we play in shaping a child's sense of self.

The preschool years, spanning ages 3 to 5, mark a crucial period in a child's development. During this time, children begin to unravel the mysteries of their identity, exploring the world around them and understanding their own power. This exploration involves a fair amount of testing, where children distinguish between reality and fantasy as they shape their authentic selves.

The independence displayed by the young girl on the sidewalk is a testament to the importance of allowing children the freedom to discover themselves. As adults, it's natural to feel a twinge of sadness, perhaps stemming from a desire to keep our children close and shield them from the world. However, it is through nurturing independence that we empower children to navigate life with confidence and authenticity.

In the journey of nurturing a child's authentic self, the preschool years emerge as a critical point. It is a time of exploration, curiosity, and self-discovery that sets the stage for a resilient and confident individual. As adults, let us embrace our roles as guides, modeling healthy communication and providing the space for children to express their authentic selves. By doing so, we contribute to a future generation unafraid to embrace their true identities, promoting a world filled with authenticity and genuine connection.

In the dynamic world of education, collaboration often serves as the catalyst for innovation and positive change. The Feelings Fairy, LLC, has taken a significant step towards transforming the educational landscape through its groundbreaking partnership with the Los Angeles County Office of Education's Multilingual Academic Support (LACOE MAS) Unit. Together, we have developed a unique curriculum, The Inclusive Classroom, that seamlessly integrates wellbeing, literature, and lessons designed to support multilingual learners inclusively in classrooms. Currently, I am actively co-facilitating professional development for this curriculum at Cesar E Chavez Elementary in Montebello, CA.

The collaboration between The Feelings Fairy and LACOE MAS Unit emerged from a shared vision to address the diverse needs of multilingual learners in the classroom. Recognizing the importance of promoting wellbeing alongside language acquisition, The Feelings Fairy embarked on a mission to create a curriculum that would make a lasting impact.

At the heart of this collaboration lies a groundbreaking wellbeing curriculum developed by The Feelings Fairy. This curriculum goes beyond the traditional educational approaches, incorporating elements that support the emotional and social development of multilingual learners. Our goal is to create an inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

One of the most exciting aspects of this collaboration is the ongoing professional development sessions led by Roberta Gonzalez and myself at Cesar E Chavez Elementary in Montebello, CA. These sessions serve as a bridge between the curriculum and educators, empowering them with the tools and insights needed to effectively implement the program in their classrooms.

The professional development sessions are designed to be interactive, hands-on experiences for educators. Through my expertise and passion for wellbeing, I engage with teachers, providing them with practical strategies to incorporate the curriculum seamlessly into their daily lessons. The goal is to empower educators to create a learning environment that nurtures the academic and emotional growth of all students.

The Feelings Fairy's partnership with LACOE MAS Unit is not just a collaboration; it's a personal journey toward inclusive and effective education. By combining a focus on wellbeing with literature and lessons tailored for multilingual learners, this collaboration is setting a new standard for classroom engagement. As I continue to co-facilitate professional development at Cesar E Chavez Elementary, the ripple effects of this partnership are sure to extend far beyond Montebello, inspiring educators and positively impacting students throughout the region.
