"Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus." -Alexander Graham Bell Take a moment to see if you can find the butterfly in the photo above.
Have you ever been told to pay attention or to focus? Hearing this most likely resulted in a defensive response or annoyance. However, the fact of the matter is that you weren't paying attention or focusing on whatever it was you were to focus on at that given moment. We all have moments like this in our lives. It is having the awareness that it occurred and taking it upon ourselves to do what we need to do to at that moment. One of the benefits of practicing Mindfulness regularly is that it increases our brain's ability to bring focus and attention to the present moment. Allowing ourselves to recognize that our mind has wandered. Having this awareness allows us to bring our attention back to where it is needed. We can replace our defensive response or annoyance with a healthier response and an increased awareness with ourselves. Plus continuing to enjoy that present moment more clearly!
